Upcycled sail bags

Our Materials

Keep in mind, every Salty Bag is a unique piece. There are differences in texture, color, stitching and aging, depending on how hard and how often each sail was used. Salty Bags may come with stains, abrasions, scrapings, creases or marks.
These form the traces of each Salty Bag’s unique story.

Please note:

Salty Bag is a Vegan friendly brand.

We do not use animal-leather, we only source plant-based leathers.

Tip:

If your Salty Bag is mostly white, it means that it is made of polyester (commonly known as DACRON®) and comes from a sail used in cruising. Racing sails are either from a yellowish material called KEVLAR®, or from a black and grey Carbon-fibres or a grey and white  from Spectra® / Dyneema®. A thinner, and often colorful material is ripstop NYLON®.

Sails, Reborn from the Sea

Also known by the Dupont trade name DACRON®, polyester is the fabric of today’s “classic” white sailcloth, widely used for its combination of low stretch, good strength and durability – a good choice for cruising sails, as well as some racing sails.
Ripstop-Nylon is used to make spinnakers, a, usually, spherical sail, because of its light weight, high tensile strength, superior abrasion resistance and flexibility. Ripstop-Nylon sails are light and thankfully oftentimes colourful.
First introduced in 1965, Kevlar is the registered trademark for a para-aramid synthetic fiber currently used where a high tensile strength-to-weight ratio is needed, from bicycle tires and racing sails to body armor, as it is 5 times stronger than steel. Kevlar is easily distinguished by its yellowish or hay colour.
For a strength to weight ratio that is almost unsurpassed by any other sailcloth racing sails are made of thin strips of Carbon-fibres. If you see a Salty Bag that is stiff and black it’s probably made from reused Carbon-fibre Sails.

Textiles, Reborn from the Land

The favorite option for all sorts of applications requiring weather resistance is Sunbrella, a solution dyed acrylic fabric that is very weather resistant. We use sunbrella in parts of our bags requiring abrasion resistance and to cover our Erimitis model.
100% recycled polyester from plastic bottles.
Recyclable virgin polyester lining.
We use Pinatex® pineapple “leather”. In their own words,”Piñatex® is an innovative natural textile made from pineapple leaf fibre. The leaves are the byproduct of existing agriculture, and their use creates an additional income stream for farming communities. Piñatex® is a natural, sustainably-sourced, cruelty free material.”

Reclaimed, Recycled & Recyclable Straps and Handles

We source used seat belts from car recycling plants in Greece and use them as straps for our bags. Reusing is always better that recycling and seat belts have a perfect combination of smoothness and strength that perfectly lend themselves to being reused.
Our synthetic ropes are made from 100% recycled polyester.
Polypropylene is a low impact and easily recyclable material. After reclaimed seat-belts polypropylene has one of the lowest environmental footprints among bag webbing options available.
We source our natural hemp rope from master rope workers in U.K. or from locally sourced natural Jute rope.

Zippers & Closures

Since its establishment in 1934 in Tokyo, YKK has grown to become the largest zip fastener maker in the world as well as the industry byword for quality and ruggedness. YKK’s EXCELLA® line offers the highest quality metal zippers. The beautiful look enhances luxury and longevity, ensuring enjoyment of your Salty Bag for years to come. YKK Vislon® zippers are premium molded plastic zippers that are readily recyclable.
All our metal parts are bronze or brushed bronze sourced from makers in Italy.
Coats Dabond. “Coats Dabond is a bonded, twisted continuous filament polyester thread that offers excellent protection against UV-light and abrasion. It is specifically designed to withstand demanding weather conditions, making it a great choice for outdoor and marine products such as sails and awnings. Dabond is the only environmentally friendly bonded polyester thread available on the market and is excellent at resisting mildew, rot and the effects of bleaching. Its unique bonded and lubricated construction safeguards against ply untwisting in zip zag stitching, protects the needle from overheating and offers a smooth sewing experience even through several layers of heavy fabric.”
